From 7 Oct (7pm) to 21 Oct (8pm), I am exhibiting 9 images from a long term project that focuses on Zoos at a group photography exhibition at the 2902 Gallery (aka The Old School at Mount Sophia -> Map & Directions). The exhibition is entitled “Animal” and is held in conjunction with International/World Animal Day in Oct.
About the Exhibition:
Man and Animal has never been two separate entities in the past and present, nor will it ever be for the future.
Extrinsically integral to one another, three photographers – Derrick Choo, Serena Teo and Zhao Renhui – reveals their visually arresting astute and interestingly varying interpretations of the relationship between Man and Animal in the contemporary context of our world today.
Derrick’s photographs redefines voyeuristic fascination as his works draws an uncanny parallel to a ‘celebrity-obsessed’ world within the confined space at Asahiyama Zoo in Hokkaido where Man becomes paparrazi and Animals becomes ‘celebrities’. Inspired by her journey to Vietnam in 2008, Serena recreates her experience and communicates a personal appreciation towards the common subject of her works where she unveils the integral purpose of buffaloes in Southeast Asian countries through a very distinctive unique presentation of her works on photographic paper and fabric. On the other hand of the spectrum, Renhui’s works takes on a fictional and clinical approach where his photographs depicted in a narrative evokes a sense of startling cold ethereal beauty and scientific charm. Collectively, they reveal Man’s profound interest in animal species; intimate, yet to some extent, slightly detached where man will be always an observer, spectator or a voyeur looking into the bestial world forming personal attachments and impressions on the relationship between Man and Animal.
The prints are available for sale, just like at previous exhibitions. The prints are released in an edition of 5 and can be purchased matted and framed or just the print alone. If you are interested in purchasing any of the images you can drop me a note (Contact Me) for more information.
Thumbnails of the prints that I am exhibiting (they look much better in real life: 12×12″ or 12×18″ printed size!)
As part of the exhibition media run, I will be interviewed on “The Living Room” on 938LIVE tomorrow morning from 10am – 10.30am as well as doing an interview for Straits Times Life sometime this week. There might be another radio interview next week as well.
Please note the gallery opening hours are Tue – Sat: 11am – 8pm and Sun: 1pm – 6pm. The gallery is closed on Mondays. I hope you will find the time to come by to view the images!
